One Month Away

By Halee Newby (2014)

IMG_4098It’s hard to believe that in exactly a month from today, the actors will be taking the stage. Brigadoon has really evolved and I could not be more excited about it! To be perfectly honest, I was a little nervous about it, as I am with every play or musical we take on that I have never heard of before. As it is with any task, it’s a lot less daunting to take on when you have an idea of what you’re getting into. However, when I first read through my copy of the script, I immediately became infatuated with it and beyond excited to start practice. In all honesty, I think it has a lot to do with the actors themselves. Every year, there are a lot of nerves about the upcoming year when the seniors leave.

IMG_4170I think that held especially true when last year’s seniors left. It’s hard to find talent like Meri Bobber, goofiness like Will Dowsett, passion like Ilan Blanck, and pure brilliance like Bethany Zamora. I couldn’t be more happy to say; however, that my apprehensions disappeared after the first Brigadoon practice. Not only has the senior class filled their shoes flawlessly, but the underclassmen (sophomores especially) stepped up to the plate. I feel silly for worrying now! My favourite scenes so far are definitely The Market Square and when Meg tries to seduce Jeff. They have definitely been the most fun to block and have the most excitement in them. Nothing beats some good ol’ fashioned Scottish seduction! I think what really makes the show work is the chemistry.

IMG_4037In all honesty, I think that every single person in the cast plays an integral part in this show. They add to the mystery of Brigadoon as well to the excitement of magic. And I really don’t think any other group of actors could do that as well as ours. So, with just a month left until opening night, there is, admittedly, still a lot to be done; however, it’s remarkable how far we’ve come.
